Members of the English Club of the renowned high school in Mostar translated poetry written by famous American authors. The poems were previously translated by two former students of this school within the Project “Migration, Refuge and Exile in Contemporary American Literature” implemented by the Foundation “Publika” in cooperation with the Association of Translators in Bosnia and Herzegovina and funded as part of the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cultural grants’ scheme.
In cooperation with the president of the Association of Court Interpreters, Translators and Linguists GLOSAR Mostar, Mirela Alikalfić-Terzić, students of Gymnasium Mostar, members of the English Club enjoyed reading and translating poetry. Students were given the original poems in English, translated them, then recited both original and their version in Croatian language. Upon that, they were given the published translation to make a comparison. The poems “Empire of Dreams” by Charles Simic, “Immigrant Song” by Sun Yung Shin and “Ellis Island” by Joseph Bruchac were translated by Minja Pješčić and Mirela Alikalfić-Terzić as part of the project “Migration, Refuge and Exile in Contemporary American Literature” focused on translating and publishing essays, poetry and short stories of the American authors that put an emphasis on migration and identity. The project was financed by The American Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Activities such as this one prove that young people love and enjoy reading poetry and we hope for more opportunities for collaboration.

We hope to continue this cooperation in the future too, to ensure that the new generations are well aware of the importance of the literary translation profession and all specific issues surrounding this industry.
Moreover, this cooperation is a way to ensure the use of results achieved by this project and their further dissemination.
